Access to the prisons is through a narrow, damp corridor, lit only by a few candles. The cells are closed by a double door, with frames inspired by those of the prisons in the castles of Issogne and Cremolino (Alessandria); even the slits through which a small amount of light penetrates have double bars. The prisoners were kept in chains or shackles. In one of the cells a trap door opens onto a dungeon, a dark pit into which the prisoner was lowered with a rope operated by a pulley. Dungeons of this type can be found in Verrés Castle in the Valle d’Aosta.
